Around the Town and in the Garden

in Country Living, Our Farm

1. Once upon a time, two days ago, I looked out of my front door and saw this:

What’s wrong with this picture? Or, right – location, location, location.

2. The other day, I told my husband that our brother-in-law and our good friend Luke headed up to Canada for an 8-day long fishing trip, leaving behind their rather pregnant wives with little kids. “Can you believe it,” I said?

His response: “Why don’t I ever get invited?”

3. Speaking of marriage, last night I was all ready to put together a nice burrito dinner when I noticed my husband going to retrieve his .22 rifle. “I’m going in the woods to shoot some squirrels,” he said!  That was an hour before dinner, you realize – the act I found both puzzling and disconcerting due to the unusual timing.

“Maybe he wants to get away from the mean mama and the loud kids and needs something to do?” said my six-year-old daugther cheerfully in a matter-of-fact manner.

It’s a good thing you understand men, my child. It’s a useful skill to have.

4. I made this delicious eggplant “caviar” spread – a Russian classic as popular as the all-American apple pie – for Edible, a Wisconsin branch of Edible Publications, run by the fine people right here in Viroqua.

I am quite certain it’s the best batch I’ve ever prepared, made with 100% our own eggplants, tomatoes, and onions. Wow.

Also, this is the second batch I’ve made in 15+ years – but I haven’t lost the touch yet. Stay tuned for the recipe!
